Can a Semi-Truck Hydroplane?

Hydroplaning is a common and dangerous occurrence when driving on wet roads or in bad weather. But is it possible for semi-trucks or other heavy commercial vehicles to hydroplane?

The short answer is, yes, semi-trucks can hydroplane just like all other types of vehicles and it can lead to major accidents and injuries if all drivers involved are not prepared.

What Makes a Truck Hydroplane?

Hydroplaning occurs when a layer of water builds up between the tires of a vehicle and the road surface, causing the tires to lose contact with the road. While wet roads facilitate the risk in the first place, there are many factors such as speed, tire condition, water depth, road surface, and weight distribution that can contribute to the likelihood of hydroplaning.

The Dangers of Semi-Trucks Hydroplaning

When a semi-truck hydroplanes, it can be particularly dangerous due to its size and weight.  potentially leading to loss of control and accidents. Therefore, truck drivers must exercise caution and adjust their driving behavior accordingly in wet or rainy conditions to reduce the risk of hydroplaning.

Why are Semi-Truck Accidents More Dangerous than Car Accidents?

A fully loaded semi-truck can weigh up to 80,000 pounds or more, compared to the average passenger car, which typically weighs around 4,000 pounds. The sheer size and weight makes potential collisions with semi-trucks inherently more dangerous.

The additional weight makes every impact more forceful and can cause major damage to vehicles, infrastructure, and occupants involved in the accident. This increased risk means that semi-truck accidents are considerably more likely to end in severe injury or even death. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), large trucks accounted for 11% of all motor vehicle crash deaths in the United States in 2019, despite making up only 4% of registered vehicles.

What To Do if You Are Involved in a Semi-Truck Accident

If you have been involved in an accident with a semi-truck, there are several steps that are crucial to take to protect yourself legally, medically, and financially.

Document the Accident

According to Florida law, drivers involved in any type of car accident must immediately report the accident to the local police department, the county sheriff's office, or the nearest office of the Florida Highway Patrol if the accident involves:

  • Injury to any person (including minor injuries)
  • Death of any person
  • Property damage exceeding $500

Given the additional risks of semi-truck accidents, you should report any incident with a truck, regardless of how minor it may seem. Having an official police report can be essential for both insurance claims and legal proceedings.

Seek Necessary Medical Treatment

Even if you do not initially feel injured, it's essential to seek medical attention after an accident involving a semi-truck. Some injuries may not be immediately apparent, and a medical evaluation can document any injuries sustained in the accident.

This can help medical professionals find and address injuries you might not have taken note of as well as protect you if you decide to take legal action down the road.

Notify Your Insurance Company

Reporting the accident to your insurance agency initiates the claims process, allowing you to seek compensation for damages to your vehicle, medical expenses, and other losses resulting from the accident. Without reporting the accident, you may not be able to receive the coverage you're entitled to under your insurance policy.

Seek Legal Counsel

Seeking legal counsel is crucial if you or a loved one has been involved in an accident involving a semi-truck. These accidents often result in severe injuries, significant property damage, and complex legal issues. A knowledgeable attorney experienced in handling cases involving commercial vehicles can provide invaluable guidance and representation throughout the legal process.

They can investigate the circumstances of the accident, gather evidence, assess liability, negotiate with insurance companies, and pursue compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages. An experienced personal injury attorney can ensure that your rights are protected, navigate the intricacies of insurance claims and litigation, and advocate for your best interests, ultimately helping you achieve the justice and compensation you deserve.
